Beware of Abandoned Rental Trucks is the twenty-fourth level of Marathon 2: Durandal. It is the second level of Simulacrums, the eighth chapter in the game.

You objective in this flooded S'pht facility is to find and activate an ancient interstellar communications tower. Along the way, you will be opposed by Pfhor Enforcers, Cyborgs, and F'lickta.

There is a pattern buffer in the starting room, along with a 2x shield recharger.

Walkthrough[]

The starting room forms a safe haven with a pattern buffer and a 2x shield recharger. You won't find these anywhere else in the level, so you'll have to return here every once in a while.

The central area of the level, west of the starting room, is a series of rectangular open-air rooms that forms a big loop. Go to the northwesternmost room here; at map location 'A' you'll find a button that activates an elevator. Enter the corridor at the top and follow it until you reach a split in the path. Either way leads to a button at the south end of the room you should press, but the left path is shorter and has fewer enemies. After pressing that button, return to the level's central area.

There is a slowly opening door in the southwest corner that leads to the communications tower. On the bottom floor of the tower, you'll find a terminal and two different paths to take, one to the north and one to the south. Each path spirals all the way up a tower; at the top you'll find a button to hit. Visit both towers in any order, and press the button at the top of each tower. Now access any terminal in the level to be teleported to Requiem For a Cyborg. The terminal at the bottom of the tower is the fastest to reach, but it's better to head back to the starting room, recharge your shields, save the game and use one of the terminals there.

Secrets[]

In the main area of the map, two rooms east of the northwestern room with the elevator in it, the south wall has a secret door (map location 'B') that leads to the central area inside the "loop". Inside, floating in the water, you'll find weapons of every type in the game, along with tons of ammo for those weapons. There are also a 1x, 2x, and 3x shield canister here.

This terminal contains a message from Thoth, who tells you the humans are safe, and that what must be done here should be clear. After completing the mission objective, Thoth sends a cryptic message about keeping something (which the translator tentatively calls "bleating goats") far from Lh'owon. These "goats" may be the Pfhor, as the next level is set on a Pfhor spaceship.
