Death of a Hulk

A dying Hulk (art by Craig Mullins)

Known to the UESC Marathon's crew as "Hulks", these aliens stand over ten feet tall and have almost no fat on their entire bodies, which forces them to eat constantly. They are incredibly strong, and able to kill humans with one strike from their bare hands. Slow-moving, they are nevertheless deadly at close range due to their heavy crushing strikes.[1]

The Hulk appears only in two levels in Marathon, once in a level that has several BOBs in it, and another time in a remote quarantine storage.

This alien race once caused the most destructive slave revolt against the Pfhor after their scientists implanted cybernetics into one of them [2]. It's implied that the race is know by the Nar, who consider them gentle creatures, even knowing they enjoy crushing Nebulons [3].

Quotes[]

The Hulk is an enormous and rather slow creature, but it is incredibly strong. The science report indicated that it had no body fat, and therefore had to be fed often to keep it active. One crew member reported seeing one of these creatures pointing to itself and mumbling "Drinniol" right before it "picked Johnny up by the shirt and crushed him against a pillar".
- Leela, from Marathon, Defend THIS!, Terminal 4

[...] But the Pfhor found much that they were unable to exploit, and they destroyed all known traces of these technologies after a foolhardy Pfhor scientist implanted a Jjaro cybernetic junction into a Drinniol, causing the most terrible and destructive slave revolt in Pfhor history.
- Tycho, from Marathon: Durandal, For Carnage, Apply Within, Terminal 1

"when six of my nine(there are actually 13) tendrils are ripped from my body and the pain from them is keeping me awake, even though I am alone and among yellow blooded whiners, I will never speak (Although gentle creatures, Drinniol are well known to enjoy crushing nebulons) because I cannot; the pain is too great."
- Robnar the Nar High Seer, from Marathon: Infinity, Thing What Kicks. . . , Terminal 1

Trivia

  • The Hulks inspired a cut enemy developed for Halo CE under the name Drinol [4]. The same enemy was planned for Halo 2, but cut again. The creature itself was later made cannon and named Sharquoi [5].
  • Hunters from Halo, although named after a different Marathon enemy, essentially have the same gameplay purpose as Hulks and Hunters from Marathon, not to mention being similar in appearance. Both are slow moving, large, incredibly durable enemies that are extremely lethal at close range, being able to kill the player in one or two hits. However, Hulks have no ranged attacks, weak points, and are slower.
