We're Everywhere is the sixth level in Marathon 2: Durandal. It is the third and final level of Volunteers, the second chapter of the game. In this water-filled level, you must open a pair of large external doors so Durandal can land shuttles there.

You will face Pfhor Hunters here for the first time in the game. There are S'pht Compilers as well. Fortunately, you will be assisted by BOBs.

There is one pattern buffer in a room in the southeast part of the level. An oxygen replenisher can be found in the room north of the pattern buffer, and a 2x shield recharger can be found to the east of the buffer. Another 2x shield recharger can be found underwater in the northeast corner of the map, close to the start of the level.

Walkthrough[]

At the start, help the BOBs clear the area of enemies. If you haven't found a second Magnum yet, you might want to kill some BOBs on this level as they can drop one. After the fight, jump in the water and swim to the west end, where you will find a 2x shield recharger at the base of a column. If you hadn't found the Zeus Class Fusion Pistol in the second level, you'll find one here at the base of the underwater stairs, along with some ammo for it.

Go up the stairs and follow the corridor. You'll reach a ledge overlooking the large, water-filled central hall of the level. Move south along the ledge; you'll find a side room to the east with a pattern buffer at the south end. Even further south in the main hall there's a button that lowers a bridge, allowing you to cross to the opposite ledge to more easily reach the enemies there.

In the large machinery hall to the east of the pattern buffer room, there is a 2x shield recharger in the east wall. If you go north from the pattern buffer room, you'll find an oxygen replenisher, and further to the north you'll finally see the level's first terminal.

From the terminal, head south and take the upper bridge westward across the main hall. Head all the way west, then south and you'll find the hall with the doors you have to open. There's one button right next to you, and another one at the end of the ledge, on the opposite side of the hall. Hit both buttons, then return to the first terminal in the northwest part of the map to go to the next level, Ex Cathedra. Do make sure your oxygen supply is topped up before you leave, as you'll be doing some swimming on the next level and there's no oxygen replenisher there.

Secrets[]

In the watery area on the west side of the map there's an alcove just above the water level (map location B). You can grenade jump into this alcove to get some ammo.

A much more complicated secret is found in the southeast corner of the level. South of the 2x shield recharger you'll find a room with two hexagonal pillars and several switches in it (map location A). Use a charged Fusion Pistol shot through the window bars to hit the half-submerged switch in the southeast corner of the room. Aim carefully, because if you hit the breakable panel next to the switch the mechanisms in this room will be disabled and you can't access the secret.

After you've hit the half-submerged switch, go to the northwest corner of the level, where the underwater 2x shield recharger is. Just south of it, a submerged door will have opened, revealing a very long underwater tunnel leading all the way into the southeast room you saw earlier through the barred windows.

Jump onto the south platform and ride it up. Now jump across to the north platform (firing a grenade downwards in mid-air helps). There are two switches here, one in the northwest corner and one in the northeast corner. Hit either switch (again, be careful not to hit the breakable panel next to the switch) to activate the elevator you're on. It'll carry you all the way to the roof of the building, where there's a ton of shotgun ammo lying around.

Terminals TychoiscoolbeansTRANSWHAT[]

The first terminal is a message from Durandal. He first demonstrates his rampancy to you, by sarcastically stating that Tycho accused him of being sarcastic and held a grudge against him for six years.

He then tells you that he has detected Tycho nearby, signifying that the Pfhor's reinforcements have arrived. In order to land heavy machinery to defend against the reinforcements, Durandal wants you to open a pair of heavy doors, and then to return to the terminal.

If you return to the terminal after opening the doors, Durandal tells you about the Pfhor's Ministry for the Eradication Through Imitation of Hostile Species Unsuitable for Enslavement, the committee which produced the simulacrums which boarded the UESC Marathon. They worked meticulously to design several versions, but made the mistake of dressing them all in green coveralls, which made all of the airlock technicians, who wore the same uniform, wander the ship naked during the attack.

The second terminal is a mysterious message from Thoth. It is broken up and corrupted, and, while it all grammatically makes sense, only the first line can be discerned to mean anything to the player. Thoth tells you that he was left behind, presumably by the Jjaro, and his fate and another are shared.

Trivia[]

  • This level's name is a reference to the BoB saying "They're Everywhere!", the original voice line from the BoBs in the first Marathon.
  • When this map is opened in a map editor, a written message can be found outside the bounds of the level. It reads, "hey you, the bob carrying my 2nd pistol! - let's go!".
  • Next to the northern button that opens one of the huge doors, there's a breakable panel. Hitting this panel disables both door buttons, but it opens the doors as well, which saves you some time.
