Pfhoraphobia is the twenty-third level in Marathon. It is the seventh level of The Pfhor, the fifth chapter of the game. This level has two objectives: explore all areas, and destroy the Pfhor Controller Cyborg.
Unfortunately, there are no pattern buffers or shield rechargers in this level.
To the left of your starting position, there's a room where some Compilers are experimenting on a human prisoner. Kill the Compilers, then return to the starting room.
There are several paths you can take a this point, one leading through the northern and eastern parts of the level before looping back to the starting room, and another path leading to the west, straight to the Pfhor Controller Cyborg you have to kill. Since you have to explore everywhere to complete the level, all paths must be fully explored, but you can tackle them in any order.
The hardest path is the one leading to the Pfhor Controller Cyborg; since there is no opportunity to save your progress here, it's recommended to visit the Cyborg first while your ammo reserves and shields are still high.
From the starting location, jump across the room to the north to go to the Pfhor Controller Cyborg. In a corridor up ahead, you will be ambushed: two walls will slide open—one a little further onward, and one behind you—and lots of enemies will come out to attack you. You can interact with the northernmost wall in this corridor to reveal one of the squads of aliens, eliminating them ahead of time and making the ambush a lot easier to survive.
At the far northwest end of the corridor you'll look down into a large room (room A on the map) with lots of enemies. Across from you on the other side of the room you'll see the Controller Cyborg. He doesn't move or shoot at all, and a few shots from your Magnum should be enough to destroy him. You don't have to drop down into the room, but if you do, a teleporter there will take you back to the start of the level.
Back in the starting room of the level, another path involves falling down to the bottom of the room. At the end of a corridor running northwest you'll find a teleporter that sends you to a circular hall to the northeast. There are two doors here: one to the west and one to the southwest.
The western door will loop around the circular room, leading through some twisting corridors all the way back to a hidden door in the starting room. At point B on the map, a wall panel can be opened to reveal an Alien Weapon and an invisibility powerup. Don't forget to explore some side rooms to the east, available through a door about halfway down the corridor just before you reach the stairs.
From the circular room, you can also pick the southwest door to follow a path that curves towards the northern part of the level. At the very north end of the room up ahead you'll find a teleporter leading back to the start of the level. Don't take it yet, because there's another area to explore here. Drop down into the large hole in the floor in front of the hull breach looking out into space. At the bottom, go south to find a room with an elevator leading back to a previously visited corridor. From that elevator, you can also jump to an alcove in the wall to your left to pick up an infrared vision powerup.
Once you've explored the whole level and killed the Controller Cyborg, find a window that faces the UESC Marathon to be teleported to Ain't Got Time Pfhor This... One of the places where you can see the Marathon is at the bottom of the hull breach at the north end of the level; another place is the Controller Cyborg's room.
- The music for this level is a song titled New Pacific (Reprise). It was previously heard on Unpfhorgiven. It is track #10.
- This is one of the only levels in Marathon which lacks a save terminal.
- In earlier versions of the Aleph One port of Marathon, Marathon M1A1, there was a secret save terminal on the wall right near where you start the level. This secret save terminal was not in the original game and was removed in later versions of Marathon M1A1.
