Runners

Runners

Runners are cybernetic mercenaries.[1]

Overview[]

Runners are former humans who have given up their original form in exchange for access to supernatural abilities.[2] Runners' bodies are bio-synthetic shells,[3] and they are able to transfer their consciousness to different bodies via clone technology, which means that they don't really die during their runs.[4] The shells are extraordinarily expensive, and if a Runner loses their shell in the field, they are expected to cover the costs themselves. When damaged, Runners have been observed to bleed a blue, blood-like substance.[5]

Upon reactivation, a Runner undergoes a grounding exercise with an AI. They are shown items, pictures of their past organic selves, etc. There is evidence that a Runner's memories deteriotate every time their conciousness is transferred to a new shell.[5]

Runners were operating on Tau Ceti IV by 2893.[6]

  • Each Runner was originally treated as their own unique character.[7] This was later changed to each Runner being a shell, rather than an individual.
