Six Thousand Feet Under is the thirteenth level in Marathon 2: Durandal. It is the fourth and final level of Citadel, the fourth chapter of the game. This level is set in an expansive lava-filled cave system, deep below the surface of Lh'owon. Durandal sent you here to find long-forgotten knowledge stored in ancient S'pht terminals.

The caves are inhabited by lots of F'lickta. Numerous Cyborgs have infiltrated the area as well, particularly the final northeast section of the map. There are also many Ticks harmlessly flitting about.

There are four pattern buffers on this map. One is located in the southeast corner. Another pattern buffer is found next to a 1x shield recharger in a room to the northwest of a lavafall. The third pattern buffer is found in the north of the level, at the beginning of the level's final section. In the room just west of the third buffer, another 1x shield recharger can be found. A 2x shield recharger is located in the northeast corner of the level, and finally, the fourth pattern buffer is found in the exit terminal room.

Walkthrough[]

There are various different possible starting positions in this level; one position will be picked at random. Try to head to the southeast corner of the map.

Somewhere along the path you will come across a long, straight corridor with a metal wall with circular patterns in it. There's a ledge here overlooking a pattern buffer; jump down, use the buffer, and head west to find the first Durandal terminal as well as some buttons you should hit. Back to the east, you'll be able to get back north to some stairs; turn west up the stairs and follow the path back up until you come to a split in the path.

Follow the right path (this path was impassable earlier), making your way to a room with a 1x shield recharger and a pattern buffer.

Go back to the split in the path, and head further up, past the point where you jumped down to the first pattern buffer before. Stick to the path and follow it all the way around to the west end of the level, where you'll eventually find a S'pht terminal at the end of a short side path to your left. Read the terminal, then get back to the main path.

Keep following the path. At some point, just past a lavafall, you'll come across a short gap in the path, where you can jump across a narrow chasm. Instead of jumping across, turn right and drop down onto the narrow ledge just below you. Follow that ledge eastwards, and at the end jump across the gap into an opening in the wall. You'll find a room here (map location A) with another S'pht terminal, some buttons you should press, and a few strange, flickering objects in a cage.

Jump back down to a lower ledge from the entrance to this room, and make your way to the northernmost side room of the level. You'll be able to cross to the terminal on the other side now (the room was previously flooded with lava). In this terminal room, you'll find a 1x shield recharger as well as a button that lowers the lava level elsewhere in the level.

Now go back to the main path through the level. Go all the way back to the lavafall, and this time, jump across the small gap in the path, to the corridor beyond. You'll soon reach the end of the upper ledge. North from you, across the chasm, you'll see two ledges (a low one and a high one); jump across onto the high ledge (the route you should take here is indicated on the map by a red arrow). Follow it northeast to find another pattern buffer.

East of the pattern buffer, you'll find a large hall filled with Cyborgs and F'lickta. You can clear the room in the usual way with your weapons, but there's a faster way. Go to the southeast corner of the hall, and use the button to activate the elevator. At the top, the left switch floods the room with lava, killing the enemies here. Hit the left switch again to lower the lava level, then hit the right switch to lower the elevator.

Make your way to the northwest corner of the hall. Follow the corridor to the north, then west until you reach the 2x shield recharger. Go through the door, and follow the path, jumping across a chasm at the end of a narrow set of stairs, to reach the final room in the level. Some switches here reveal a pattern buffer and two terminals, the north one being the exit terminal from which you are teleported to If I Had a Rocket Launcher, I'd Make Somebody Pay.

Terminals TychoiscoolbeansTRANSWHAT[]

Lhar-d<39.29c.62.2>[]

The first terminal is a message from the S'pht Olders, who have united and released the S'ct'lac'tr inside the Citadel to destroy the Pfhor upon their entry.

EPAL4mm//toneskfa31'loa'kr[]

The second terminal is a corrupted message from Durandal. The Pfhor have defeated him, and he is going to try to land his crippled ship on Lh'owon's second moon, Y'loa. He tells you that you are too deep to be teleported out when you're done, but a S'pht terminal may help to amplify the signal. He then ends his message, telling you the answer is there somewhere.

Yr-c<39.59fc.93.9>[]

The third terminal is another message from the S'pht. S'pht'Lhar was defeated the day before and tens of thousands of prisoners were captured and enslaved.

ax1-40^23<094.95.28.85>[]

The fourth terminal is a S'pht terminal again, about the W'rkncacnter, Yrro, and Pthia.

Mnr-e<29.94.91d.39>[]

The next terminal is another message from the S'pht, who say that the Olders have disclosed the final message of the S'pht'Kr, but have no time to decipher it.

tyche'kr0625.14.1[]

The last terminal is from Durandal; he tells you that you have the answer, but that he may be destroyed before anything can be done. He also tells you that the Pfhor want to capture the Boomer intact so they can study his improvements, and that the Pfhor Naval Academy will be teaching of The Humbling of Battle Group Seven at Lh'owon rather than The Third Battle for Beta Tear as one of the Seven Great Battles.
